Plant Notes: Golden Garden Trio
Have you ever seen a plant combination that stops you right in your tracks?
This one did that for me.
Last weekend, I was in the garden with my mother. We were weeding—tucked low, hands deep in the soil—when I happened to look up. And just like that, the light hit in exactly the right way.
Their garden is full of beautiful corners (my mum has the greenest of thumbs, and I’ve helped design the space over the years), but this moment was especially special.
The low sunlight caught the soft yellow glow of a globe flower in just the right way. Against the warm golds and ambers in the background, it looked like something out of a painting. Even the tips of the flower buds had a bit of shadow, echoing the deeper tones in the nearby foliage.
That little composition—unexpected and perfect—just made me stop, breathe in, and simply enjoy.
Here’s what made up the moment:
- Globe Flower (Trollius europaeus) – front and center, glowing in cool yellow
- ‘Onnimanni’ Azalea (Rhododendron ‘Onnimanni’) – blooming in the background with rich golden flowers
- ‘Amber Jubilee’ Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Jefam' Amber Jubilee™) – with warm amber-red foliage tying it all together
Plant Notes
Perennials:
Globe Flower (Trollius europaeus) — A classic early summer perennial with buttercup-like blooms. Its soft yellow petals and upright form bring lightness to any border.
- USDA Zone: 3–6
- Flowering time (Zone 5): Late May to July
Shrubs:
‘Amber Jubilee’ Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Jefam' Amber Jubilee™) — Known for its richly toned foliage that shifts from orange to amber to burgundy through the season. A sturdy backdrop plant with beautiful contrast.
- USDA Zone: 2–7
- Flowering time (Zone 5): Late spring to early summer (flowers are subtle—foliage is the star)
‘Onnimanni’ Azalea (Rhododendron ‘Onnimanni’) — This deciduous azalea offers warm golden blossoms and a light scent. It provides a glowing, airy structure to the planting.
- USDA Zone: 4–7
- Flowering time (Zone 5): Early to mid-June
Note: 'Onnimanni' is a Finnish cultivar that may not be widely available outside Europe. For a similar effect, look for other golden-flowered deciduous azaleas suitable for your region.
It’s the kind of combination that doesn’t shout—but when the light hits it right, it sings.
Sometimes, all we need is one good moment in the garden to remind us: it’s okay to stop, breathe, and just notice.
